How to Select the Right Gearbox & Geared Motor for Industrial Machinery
Selecting the correct industrial gearbox or geared motor is much more than matching motor HP.
A gearbox that works perfectly on one machine may not be suitable for another machine even when both use the same HP motor.
That is why understanding RPM, gear ratio, torque, mounting, load and duty cycle is essential before selecting an industrial gearbox.
- Check Motor Power
Start with the motor rating, normally specified in HP or kW.
However, HP alone should never be used to finalize a gearbox. The gearbox must also be capable of handling the torque and operating conditions of the machine.
- Know the Required Output RPM
One of the main purposes of an industrial gearbox is to reduce motor speed to the speed required by the machine.
For example, if a motor operates at a relatively high RPM but the conveyor, mixer, crane or machine requires much lower speed, the gearbox provides the necessary speed reduction.
- Determine the Gear Ratio
Gear ratio connects input speed with output speed.
As a simplified relationship:
Gear Ratio ≈ Input RPM ÷ Required Output RPM
The required ratio should therefore be calculated according to the actual machine speed instead of selecting an available gearbox randomly.
- Check Required Output Torque
Torque is one of the most important factors in gearbox selection.
Applications involving heavy loads, lifting, conveying, crushing or frequent starting can require substantial output torque.
Selecting only according to motor HP and ignoring torque can result in an incorrectly sized gearbox.
- Consider the Duty Cycle
Ask how the machine actually operates:
Does it run continuously?
Does it start and stop frequently?
Does it operate only a few hours each day?
Does the load vary?
Does it experience shock loading?
A geared motor operating continuously has different requirements from one operating intermittently.
- Select the Appropriate Gearbox Type
Different gearbox designs are suitable for different requirements.
Helical Inline Geared Motor: Suitable for efficient inline power transmission in many industrial machines and conveyors.
Worm Gearbox: Commonly used where compact right-angle transmission and substantial speed reduction are required.
F Series Parallel Shaft Geared Motor: Useful where a compact parallel-shaft arrangement and higher torque capability are required.
K Series Helical Bevel Geared Motor: Provides efficient right-angle power transmission for demanding industrial applications.
Planetary Gearbox: Suitable for applications requiring high torque density and compact construction.
- Check Mounting & Shaft Arrangement
The correct gearbox also needs to physically fit the machine.
Check:
Foot or flange mounting, shaft diameter, hollow or solid shaft, input arrangement, output orientation and installation position.
These details become particularly important when replacing an existing gearbox with another model or brand.
